SUGGESTED SUPPLY LIST FOR ARIZONA WATERCOLOR CLASSES

WATERCOLOR PAINTING CLASS
Bert Boerema, instructor

Arizona Art Supply in Tucson is a good source for supplies. They are located at 4343 N. Oracle Road, Tucson AZ 86705. Phone (520) 388-5555. They give a 20% student discount if you bring in a copy of this supply list.

WATERCOLOR PAINTS

We will be using traditional watercolor paint, properly known as transparent watercolor. This should be purchased in tubes. You may use either student-grade or professional-grade paints. For student grade I recommend Winsor-Newton Cotman series, 8 ml tubes. Winsor-Newton also makes these same colors in a professional grade, either 5 ml or 14 ml tubes. (Gamboge Hue will be called New Gamboge.) The professional-grade pigments, although more expensive, will produce much stronger coloration and give better handling, and are the better choice in the long run.
NOTE: Single tubes are recommended over sets, since sets usually contain pigments that we rarely use.

BASIC LIST:                                                                                  OPTIONAL:
Burnt Sienna           Intense (Phthalo) Blue                     Intense (Phthalo) Green
Gamboge Hue        Permanent Rose                              ++Winsor Yellow
Raw Sienna            ++Winsor Red
Ultramarine Blue

(++ Winsor-Newton professional pigment, 5 ml tube, is recommended, because student grade paints in these colors do not work well. Substitutes are Holbein Permanent Red and Holbein Permanent Yellow Light.)

BRUSHES                    3/4" flat                        #10 round               #4 round

PALETTE            suggested type:
9 x 12 plastic, square or round wells. Must have large mixing space. A cover is handy.

WATERCOLOR PAPER

We will use Arches 140 lb. cold-press paper. This is a must! Other brands will not work as well for our projects. Buy as 22 x 30 inch sheet, and cut into quarters (11  x  15 inches). Be sure to mark the front side of the sheet at each corner before cutting. (Look for the watermark.)

MISCELLANEOUS

  • masking tape (1-inch blue preferred) or 4 large bulldog clamps (For fastening paper to the board.)
  • blue painter’s tape
  • eraser, white vinyl

FROM HOME

  • Board: tempered Masonite, plywood, Formica, etc. This is used to hold the paper while painting. Recommended board size is 19 x 24 inches, since this will hold a quarter or half sheet. Minimum size 12 x 16 inches, (Exactly  this size if you plan to use bulldog clamps instead of masking tape for a quarter sheet.) However, at some point we plan to do a half-sheet size painting, which will require the 19 x 24 inch size.
  • 2 bowls for water (Cool-Whip containers)
  • plain white paper  (a few sheets),
  • pencil
  • hair dryer
  • small towel
  • facial tissue
